HDR in 2025: Formats, Workflows, and Monitoring
High Dynamic Range (HDR) has moved beyond trials. By 2025, it’s part of mainstream production and delivery. Engineers must navigate formats, workflows, and monitoring challenges to get it right.
HDR Formats
- HDR10: Widely supported, static metadata.
- HLG: Backward-compatible with SDR displays.
- Dolby Vision: Dynamic metadata, premium distribution.
Each format has strengths and trade-offs depending on target platforms.
Workflow Integration
Producing HDR requires careful handling from acquisition through delivery. Cameras, switchers, graphics, and encoders must all support the chosen format. Conversions between HDR and SDR must preserve quality without introducing artifacts.
Monitoring
HDR monitoring is more complex than SDR. Engineers need waveform monitors that display PQ or HLG curves and tools that check metadata signaling. Operator training is critical to avoid mistakes in live environments.
Delivery
Most streaming platforms now support HDR, but consistency across devices remains a challenge. Testing on multiple endpoints is essential.
HDR is no longer optional for premium content. Success depends on choosing the right format, aligning the workflow, and monitoring carefully at every stage.
