SMPTE ST 2110 and Cloud: Bridging the Gap

As more workflows move to the cloud, ST 2110’s uncompressed streams face new challenges. By 2025, bridging on-prem 2110 systems with cloud infrastructure is increasingly common.

The Challenge

2110 was designed for LAN environments with microsecond timing. Cloud networks introduce latency, jitter, and unpredictable routing. Directly extending 2110 into cloud regions is rarely practical.

Solutions

  • Gateways: Encode 2110 into mezzanine formats like JPEG XS for transport.
  • Timing translation: Convert PTP to cloud-friendly synchronization methods.
  • Hybrid models: Keep core production on-prem, with cloud handling processing or distribution.

Engineering Considerations

  • Monitor latency budgets carefully.
  • Ensure redundancy across cloud regions.
  • Validate interoperability between vendors’ cloud gateways.
  • Train teams on both broadcast and cloud skill sets.

2110 and cloud are not mutually exclusive. With the right bridges, facilities can extend proven IP workflows into flexible cloud environments.
